Nyomuta Kaafo
Cultural Center in the Gambia
founded in 2022

The cultural center Nyomuta Kaafo is located in the Gambia, meaning "togetherness" in Mandinka. We aim to work collectively, learning from each other. Modou Lamin Jarjusey - a passionate video and photography artist with a fresh perspective and a unique artistic vision - explores identity and cultural heritage. Together with Barbara Wilding, a documentary and animation filmmaker from Vienna, who focuses on feminist stories and oral history, they produced and directed this short documentary:

The Sky is still Blue. A Call for Solidarity with Gambian Protectors of Environment (2024) is a short documentary that addresses the exploitation of resources and destruction of nature as well as the struggles of those protecting the environment. They talk about fishmeal-factories, the uncontrolled dumping of waste, extraction of sand and tree logging. These problems are present not only in the Gambia but throughout the Westafrican Coastline. The topic of illegal migration is connected to the ongoing exploitation of the continent. Hopefully, the movie inspires to support those protecting the nature and to believe in a bright future.
